So everyones clear, I’m talking about if it’s a semi-qh bar, full-qh bar, gaited, etc saddle. So I already know the brand it’s a big horn and it fit’s my quarter horse and tennesse walkin horse great, but I’m not sure what type of bars it is. I need to figure out because I’m hunting for another saddle to buy and I want it to fit like the big horn saddle does on them. And I know no saddle will fit two different horses, so please don’t hound me about this because I know. The person it came from had no clue either what type of bars it has. I think it’s semi-qh bars, but I’m not sure. I posted some pictures so you all can see -http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilovemyqhscooter/4554689447/

So doe’s anyone know what type of bars it has? I understand if you can’t tell, but thank you all in advance and for trying! :)

Also I have one other question (Is this true or false) If you’re western saddle sit’s up in the back while being on the horse does it mean it doesn’t fit rite? Like I mean when tighten up by the front cinch without a back cinch and no one in the saddle. And I also when someone is in the saddle. Thank you again!!!

There is no way to tell, but I would tend to guess full qh bars. If your saddle is rising at the back, then it is too wide at the withers, meaning that it is flattening down over the withers which rocks it upward at the rear. So, if this saddle was fitting one of your horses that way, the tree is angled too wide for that horse. If this is a full qh bar tree, the a semi qh tree would probably be better on a horse with that fitting issue since the bars are more angled. There is also no uniform standard for trees from one saddlemaker to another, so it is impossible to determine how a saddle will fit from one maker to another. It’s best to get a template of your horse’s back and use it if you can’t bring the horse to personally fit the new saddle.

Add….when you fit a saddle, it’s best to try it on the horse with no pad and no rider. If it doen’t sit well onto the horse’s back, it is not a good fit. A saddle may bridge (tree "rocker" angled wrong in the middle), which means it sits on the front and back and leaves a space in the middle, or sits off the front and onto the rear (tree too narrow) , or sits onto the front and off the back (tree too wide).

No web sites please!

I just recently saw a saddle at an antique store. I don’t know anything about western saddles, but it had that really big wide fat horn, was mostly creamish – white, and had silver tacks covering everything but the seat. The stirrups even! Is that some kind of parade saddle? Why the big horn then?

I am looking to buy a synthetic saddle but i dont know which is better. If you have any idea or any comments on one or the other or both please comment. I will just be trail riding and pleasure riding in it, no showing or anything.

I’ve seen a number of Big Horn leather saddles, and they always struck me as being cheaply made. Probably safe enough, but not nice quality. I would assume the same from their corduras.

The Abetta that my friend bought brand new was definitely poorly constructed! Being a saddle repair technician, I know what to look for, and what I saw was a big piece of junk. The rigging attachments were erratic, with the bulk of the stress being put on the smallest attachment straps instead of sharing the stress between the small and large straps. It was just made without any craftsmanship.

I haven’t seen the Big Horn cordura, but if it’s similar quality as their leather saddles, I would choose it over the Abetta. At least it’s made with care to be as strong as possible considering the materials.

Enjoy your trail riding! The synthetic saddles are light and easy to care for, keeping your life easier.
